How to get more votes on a server toplist

Every toplist on VoteRank ranks on one number: votes cast this month. Live player counts break ties, and nothing else moves you up — not premium, not advertising, not how long you have been listed. That makes "get more votes" the whole game, and it is more winnable than most owners assume, because the counters reset on the 1st and almost nobody competes properly.
Here is what actually works, roughly in order of how much difference it makes.
Reward people for voting
This is the single biggest lever, and it is not close. A server with vote rewards gets somewhere between five and twenty times the votes of an identical server without them. The reason is obvious once you say it out loud: voting takes about thirty seconds and gives the player nothing. Attach a reward and you have turned an act of goodwill into part of the gameplay loop.
The mechanics on our side are simple. Enable incentive voting on your listing, and when someone votes we call your server with their in-game name. Your server hands out whatever you decided — a mystery box, a currency bundle, a cosmetic, a small XP boost. The player sees the reward land while they are still in the game, which is what makes them do it again tomorrow.
What you give matters less than you think, as long as it is consistent and immediate. A predictable small reward beats an occasional large one. What kills the loop is uncertainty: if a player votes and nothing arrives, they will not try a second time, and they will tell people in your Discord that voting is broken.
Two rules worth following:
- Never make the reward pay-to-win. Vote rewards that meaningfully affect competitive balance turn your toplist ranking into a fairness problem, and the players who care most about the game are the ones who will notice first.
- Never gate progression behind it. "You must vote to continue" converts well for about a week and then reads as hostile. Voting should feel like a bonus, not a toll.
Ask at the right moment
Most servers put a vote link on their website and stop there. The website is the worst place for it: the people reading it have not started playing yet, and the ones who did are not going back to the site.
The moments that convert are the ones where the player is already in the game and already pleased:
- On login, once per day, as a one-line message with a clickable link.
- After a level-up, a boss kill, or whatever your equivalent of a satisfying moment is.
- When a vote cooldown expires — the player already voted once, so you know they are willing.
A /vote command that prints the link is table stakes. What separates servers that get 200 votes a month from ones that get 2,000 is whether that link is put in front of someone at a moment they were already enjoying themselves.
Understand the cooldown
Our default is one vote per person per 24 hours, and an owner can set anything from 12 hours upwards. Twelve is not automatically better. It means a dedicated player can vote twice a day, which roughly doubles your ceiling — but only if you actually remind them twice, and a second reminder in one evening is closer to nagging than the first.
Pick 12 if you have an active in-game reminder system and a player base that logs in for long sessions. Pick 24 if your players log in once a day or your reminders are passive. Changing it later is fine; changing it every week is not, because your regulars build a habit around it.
Use the monthly reset
The counters zero at 00:05 UTC on the 1st. This is the most under-used fact about toplists.
It means the ranking you see on the 3rd of the month is nearly meaningless, and a server that pushes hard in the first week can sit at the top of its list for the remaining three — which is when most of the traffic arrives and sees it. It also means a server that has been quietly accumulating votes all month has no advantage on the 1st over a brand new one.
Practically: run something at the start of the month. A double-reward weekend, a launch event, anything that gets your existing players voting in a concentrated burst. Ranking high early compounds, because rank drives clicks, clicks drive joins, and joins drive more votes.
What not to do
Every toplist has a vote-farming problem and every toplist owner knows exactly what it looks like. We remove votes we believe are fraudulent, and we do not restore them.
The things that get caught, in the order they get caught:
- Proxy and VPN farms. A stream of votes from datacentre address ranges is the easiest pattern in the world to spot, and it looks nothing like organic traffic.
- Scripted voting. Real people do not vote at intervals with a standard deviation of four seconds.
- Paid votes. The services selling them are reselling the same infrastructure to everyone, which means the pattern is already known before your server buys it.
- Vote exchanges. Trading votes with another server produces two servers whose voter populations overlap perfectly and share nothing with anyone else.
The economics are bad even ignoring the ethics. Manipulated votes get removed, and persistent manipulation gets a listing suspended and its owner banned — which costs you the ranking you already had, plus the traffic, plus the account. The upside is a position you cannot keep.
Realistic numbers
For calibration, on a mid-sized list:
- A server with no rewards and a link on its website: 10–50 votes a month.
- The same server with working rewards and an in-game reminder: 300–1,500.
- A large, established server with an engaged community: 2,000–10,000.
The gap between the first and second line is almost entirely mechanical. It is one plugin and one login message. If you are somewhere in the first band, you are not competing on community size — you are competing on whether you asked.
The short version
Turn on vote rewards. Deliver them instantly. Ask in-game at a good moment, once per cooldown. Push hard in the first week of the month. Do not buy votes.
None of this is clever. It is just that most servers do none of it, which is why the ones that do a couple of these things well end up near the top of their list within a month or two.
